It's not just Tax School, it's Training Camp

Building your team: It's not just Tax School, it's Training Camp

This time of year Liberty Tax franchisees share one primary effort and that is Tax School.  Franchisees all over the country have been working hard to fill their tax classes.  However, simply holding a Tax Class, or even several of them, and getting butts into seats is not the primary objective.

The primary objective this time of year is to build a strong team that becomes a significant force behind your growth and success.  A strong team is what raises the ceiling for your success!  Tax School is simply a proven and essential method to begin that process of building your team.

The end goal is not just to have tax school students. The Goal is Building Your Team.  It’s easy to lose sight of this fact.  Of course, you need tax school students to build your team, but it is possible (and dangerous) to hold what looks like a “successful” tax school and not gain an inch of progress in building a strong team.

The Right Perspective

Did you know that of Liberty's Top 10 for Success Tax School is NOT on the list?  What it does include is; “Hire More Employees Than You Think You Will Need", AND, "Proper Staffing”.  That’s because the real goal is to build a strong, lasting team that drives your growth and success year after year, and you need lots of good people to enable you to do that (and for the record, Tax School is listed as #1 and #2 on the Top 10 for Planning Season - so there is no doubt it is a critical part of the Liberty System).

Another way to frame the significance of the tax classes and training that we hold this time of year is to view it like a Training Camp for a professional sports team.  Viewing this time of year as “Training Camp” can have a profound impact on the actions you take to build your team (and fill your tax classes).

Taking Some Notes From The NFL

Interestingly, there is a strong parallel between the purpose and strategies of an NFL training camp in building a winning team, and how our Tax School should be approached to build our own winning teams.  Let’s take a quick look:

  • Each NFL team begins their training camps months before the season starts.
  • Teams bring in as many quality players as possible. More than they will need!
  • Only the best make the team. ~90 players come to camp, only 53 make the team, and only 46 suit up to play each week.
  • Team culture, goals, and expectations are communicated and established during training camp.
  • Leaders are identified and raised up.
  • Rookie and veteran players are engaged, learning, practicing and being evaluated.

The Big Picture

What would happen if an NFL team (or a Liberty Tax office) didn’t hold a Training Camp?  Or if they cut Training Camp short?

  • Players would be out of shape
  • The team would be out of sync
  • There would be confusion about the game plan and the strategies necessary to beat their opponents
  • They would lose the game do to poor performance
  • Coaches would get fired
  • Players would get frustrated
  • Top players and coaches would eventually move on to a better team

What would happen if an NFL training camp (or a Liberty Tax School) only brought in 46 players - or only exactly what they needed to start the season?

  • Bad players would make the roster
  • Lack of players with specialized skills/experience
  • Injuries would soon leave gaps in the roster
  • Couldn’t field a full team by the end of the season

Clearly, there is no way a professional sports team could become a champion without building a strong team during training camp.  The same is true in our business.  A winning tax season starts with building a strong team during Training Camp.

Time To Train

How is your Training Camp Going?

  • Is your Fall Tax School objective and perspective to hold a serious Training Camp that will build your team?
  • Or has your objective got off track to only getting butts into seats (which is no doubt better than nothing, but not good enough to become a champion)?
  • Have you evaluated what your unique team needs to continue to improve?
  • Are these needs being addressed in your Training Camp?

Remember, it's not Just Tax School.  It’s Training Camp.  You are building a team that will either limit or expand your opportunity for success.
